Towada-Hachimantai National Park is known for its volcanoes, lakes and mountain streams among many others. Situated in the northern part of Tohoku region, it consists of two areas; the Towada-Hakkoda area with Hakkoda Mountains, Lake Towada and Oirase-Keiryu (mountain stream), and the Hachimantai area with Mt. Hachimantai, Mt. Akita-Komagatake, and Mt. Iwate and others.

A museum of volcanoes surrounded by primeval forests

The Hachimantai area is made up of about 40 volcanoes including Mt. Hachimantai, which gave its name to the area, Mt. Iwate and Mt. Akita-Komagatake. Being a major volcanic region in Japan, various volcanic phenomena such as vapor of gases are seen in many places, which is why the area is also known as “Museum of Volcanoes”. Also unique culture and scenery exist in each therapeutic hot springs, one of benefits from volcanoes.

Adding color or drama to the four seasons around the summit area are the wilderness of alpine plants and colored autumnal leaves, in addition to the wild animals living there. Characterized by various mountain trails and nature observation trails, the environment for readily enjoying such Mother Nature also is available.

In Hachimantai area, the profoundness of nature and culture of Tohoku can be appreciated.

Animals and Plants

In the vast Japanese beech forest and the primeval forest of Maries' fir in Hachimantai area, a variety of wild animals such as Asiatic black bear, Japanese serow, Japanese marten and stoat are coming and going. Although they are too watchful to appear easily before our eyes, it isn’t really that much difficult to find wildlife signs such as foot marks, dungs, etc. being left in the fields.

At each of areas around the tranquil mountain marshes filled with water and on the barren ground surfaces covered in volcanic gravels; rare species of alpine flowers that are suited for their respective environment grow and bloom in profusion. Especially on Hachimantai Nature Observation Trail, such views can be enjoyed by many of both inexperienced and experienced hikers in a very short-time walk from a parking lot.

In Hachimantai area, visitors can enjoy camping, nature walking and mountain climbing in the middle of Mother nature there. By taking one step into a forest and a mountain, everyone could relax and refresh themselves while getting away from daily life.

Including the Snowshoe trekking that can be enjoyed easily by everyone from children to elderlies and the slope skiing in which the finest snow quality can be fully enjoyed; the activities for making you feel the national park closer to you are readily available even in winter. Here, a variety of experiences are waiting for you throughout a year.

Hot springs and Culture of Hot-spring cure

In Japan, we have a culture of “Toji” or Hot-spring cure, under which we stay at hot spring facilities for a long period to heal our body. In recent years, hot spring facilities providing hot-spring cure have been decreasing generally. But in Tohoku region, the hot-spring cure culture still remains. Also in Hachimantai area, there are various types of hot-spring cure facilities, each having their unique spring water qualities to heal your body.

Also, for your enjoyment, there are unique hot-spring cure cultures including the Bedrock bathing, a kind of stone sauna utilizing ground heat, and the thermal therapy called Ondol which is carried out by staying over in a room with heated floor.

Model Course

Having an array of seasonal features, the Hachimantai area shows its various aspects to you throughout a year. From easy hikes to full-scale mountain climbing, driving for enjoying sceneries, and more; we have various model courses ready, wishing everyone can find their favorite ones.

Facilities

In Hachimantai area, there are the facilities such as camp grounds, ski grounds and others where you can experience the great nature closely. Also many hot springs here have been known as the therapeutic hot springs for a long time. Each of them makes you feel their respective history and tradition. Please visit the visitor center, where we can propose various ways of enjoying the national park and also provide information on Nature.
