Weddell Seal (Leptonychotes weddelli) Pinnepedia/ Phocidae

Length: 280cm (male), 330cm (female). Weight: 400-450kg. The color and the pattern vary greatly, but in general, the seals are brownish in spring and dark brown with light spots in other seasons.

The head is relatively small compared to the body. They live on the periphery of the Antarctic Continent, many on the fast ice. They spend spring and summer on ice while breeding, but stay under ice during winter. Their cuspids are worn out more distinctively compared to other species for they drill breathing holes in the ice. The current population is estimated as 750,000. Frequently spotted around the Syowa Station.
