The Antarctic Continent is mostly covered with ice and only a few percentage of the land is exposed without snow or ice cover for a certain period of time in the year. Because of the harsh environment, animals that live in the exposed area are very limited in variety and quantity. On the other hand, the Southern Ocean around the Continent keeps its water temperature above -2 degrees centigrade and nurtures rich biosphere. Food chain is formed by a variety of living forms such as phytoplankton, zooplankton, fish, birds and sea mammals.
