Chlamydomonas species (Chlamydomonas) Chlorophyta/Chlamydomonadales
The sorbet-like snow surface is often colored in red or green in Antarctica when it starts melting. This is due to the algae, called “snow algae”, tapped and growing in the surface snow layer. This green alga is called Chlamydomonas and a red pigment hematochrome covers the chloroplasts when the cell is inactive.
