Distance:

A driving course along the rooftop of Kyushu, from Kuju to Aso.

Course Outline

Drive along the Yamanami Highway from the direction of Beppu and Yufuin and you will arrive at a straight road that looks out on Tadewara Marsh, Chojabaru, and the Kuju Mountain Range. The view from here makes for a fantastic photo spot. The grasslands sprawling beneath the mountains, the steaming surface of Mt. Io, and Mt. Mimata and Mt. Hossho looming on either side create the iconic landscape of Kuju. Leave Chojabaru Onsen behind and as you drive to a higher altitude, the slopes of Mt. Hossho draw closer. Drive further and you will arrive at the highest point along the Yamanami Highway: Makinoto Pass, at 1,330 m above sea level. Visitors can enjoy the four seasons with views of frost by the road in winter, flowering plants from spring to summer, and colorful foliage in autumn. Descending to Senomoto Plateau, the Aso Gogaku Five Peaks come into view. The Yamanami Highway, named one of Japan's 100 most famed roads, lifts drivers' mood as it traverses the rooftop of Kyushu.
