Course Outline

This course takes you along two scenic recreation trails, the new Mihanabaru Nature Trail and the Teruyama Garden Nature Trail, famous for its whale watching observatory. The Mihanabaru Trail was opened in 2017 and allows you to enjoy Okinawan flora such as Rhaphiolepis indica Lindl. Var. insularis Hatusima (a type of Indian hawthorn) and Juniperus taxifolia var. lutchuensis (a type of juniper) while taking in a wonderful view of Okinawa’s main island in the distance. The Teruyama Trail is surrounded by lush vegetation and on this path, you can see blooming Rhododendron scabrum (a type of azalea) from January to March and the fruiting red bayberries (Myrica rubra) from March to April. At the end of this trail, you will find the Teruyama Observatory, which offers a splendid 360-degree panoramic view of the surroundings and a chance to catch a glimpse of the humpback whales during the winter. The two trails are located in separate locations, so it is recommended to use a car to drive between them.

The Mihanabaru Trail

Newly opened in 2017, the Mihanabaru Trail starts from a parking lot on the Kubiribaru Forest Road and leads you to an observatory on a seaside cliff. You can see the ocean from this white, sandy trail which is surrounded by wind-blocking Ryukyu Island pine trees. Along the way, there are two hilltop arbors that also offer a great view of the sea and a place to rest.

Teruyama Garden Trail

Along the Teruyama Garden Trail on the stretch between Tokashiku Beach and Aharen Beach, you can walk among the vibrant blossoms of Rhododendron scabrum, a type of azalea. There are a few uphills on the way, but the beautiful views and abundant nature make this trail enjoyable from beginning to end.

The view from Teruyama Observatory

From the hilltop Teruyama Observatory, you can look out over the ocean and see several of Kerama’s islands, including Zamami-jima, Aka-jima, and Geruma-jima Islands. In the evening, the view of sunset-painted ocean from the observatory makes for a truly breathtaking scene. You can also see the humpback whales in the winter as well as Tokashiku and Aharen Beaches from this view point.
