Video message by KOIZUMI Shinjiro, Minister of the Environment, Japan, at Ministerial Meeting to launch "The High Ambition Coalition (HAC) for Nature and People," in the One Planet Summit (January 8, 2021)

It is my real pleasure to take part in this important event in the process toward CBD COP15. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to President Emmanuel Macron and all those who have led the effort in organizing the One Planet Summit and this ministerial meeting under the current difficult situation of the COVID 19 pandemic.

First, I am very pleased to convey Japan's decision to join the High Ambition Coalition. Japan is ready to work with many other participating countries to set ambitious and realistic targets for the post 2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

Last October, Japan's Prime Minister Suga pledged to cut the country's greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. Just after that, Japan joined the Climate Ambition Alliance as well. On my part, I will do everything in my power, including specifying the 2050 climate neutrality objective in the Climate change countermeasures law, to achieve this goal. I firmly believe that this will also play an important role in bringing about solutions to biodiversity issues.

Let me also remind you that Japan has advanced the Satoyama Initiative together with many partners. This Initiative places much emphasis on natural resources in local areas and promotes designing of thriving local communities through the sustainable use of such resources.

A thriving local community will provide not only solutions to biodiversity issues, but also resilience against intensifying natural disasters due to climate change and emerging infectious diseases. Thus, the Initiative would also adequately serve the purposes of this

Coalition. Japan will continue to promote the Satoyama Initiative to address those issues based on the post 2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

Let us galvanize international actions in the face of the COVID 19 pandemic to redesign the whole of our socioeconomic system and work toward the realization of the 2050 Vision, which we shared in Aichi, "Living in Harmony with Nature."

Thank you.
