Objectives of GER Program

The main objective of the Global Environment Research Program (GER Program), funded by EAJ starting in 1990, is to promote comprehensive research and studies on global environmental conservation from interdisciplinary and international perspectives promoting cooperation with researchers from various fields.

Basic scientific knowledge plays an essential role to implement exact and effective policies for global environmental conservation. UNGASS (Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly to Review and Appraise the Implementation of Agenda 21) in June 1997, recognized the necessity of an increase of investment in research and development and encouragement of scientific cooperation to build scientific knowledge. Under this GER program, scientists from national research institutes, universities and other organizations work together for interdisciplinary and international scientific progress.
This homepage introduces the outline of the Program.

Global environmental problems are more vast in scale than many issues humanity has faced before. Since they cut across many fields, and many of their mechanisms and impacts are still unclear, comprehensive and integrated research programs are needed to address these issues. The Global Environment Research Program aims to provide foundations for the protection of global environment, and contribute to international efforts in this area. It promotes research on the global environment according to the following basic concepts, considering domestic and international trends, and links administrative bodies.

  1. In order to promote multidisciplinary and international research on the global environment, interchanges of related researchers are enhanced, and mutual coordination and collaboration among national research institutes, universities and other research organizations are encouraged under the cooperation of related ministries and agencies.

  2. The program promotes research through participating in and coordinating with international research programs such as the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program (IGBP), the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), the International Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change Programme (IHDP), and cooperative activities with foreign researchers and research organizations.
