CHAIRPERSON'S SUMMARY


  1. The Fourth International Workshop on ECO ASIA Long-term Perspective Project was held in Tokyo, Japan from 14 to 15 October 1996. It was organized by the Environment Agency of Japan and was attended by 36 participants from 11 countries and 7 international organizations. The workshop was chaired by Mr. Saburo Kato.

  2. The draft final report on ECO ASIA Long-term Perspective Project was presented by the secretariat. Participants discussed the report focusing on chapter 4 which deals with the conclusion, recommendations and follow-up activities of the ECO ASIA Lang-term Perspective Project. After intensive discussion, the secretariat prepared a revised draft of chapter 4, which was subsequently agreed upon by the participants with some amendments. With regard to the cover page, table of contents, and chapters 1, 2, and 3, it was requested that the secretariat finalize them taking into account the comments made during the session and those to he submitted by participants by the end of November. The participants were also presented with the findings of the East-West Center Project on Land Degradation and Sustainable Rural Development in Tropical Asia and agreed to attach the summary of the project to the ECO ASIA final report.

  3. The participants appreciated the offer from New Zealand to assist with editing of the final report.

  4. The participants welcomed the proposed outline of the ECO ASIA Panel which is expected to be held at the Fifth Session of the CSD in April 1997. The participants asked the secretariat to officially request that the DPCSD make it possible to hold the ECO ASIA Panel.

  5. The participants noted the brochure of ECO ASIA Long-term Perspective Project was well written. The participants were requested to submit all additions and comments, if any, to the secretariat by the end of November.

  6. The chairman's discussion paper on the future of the ECO ASIA Long-term Perspective Project was extensively discussed, and the participants agreed that:

    1. the Long-term Perspective Project is going to enter Phase II for further elaboration, implementation and monitoring of the findings of the Report,

    2. the participants should try to ensure that the recommendations and follow-up activities be implemented, and

    3. the Fifth International Workshop on ECO ASIA Long-term Perspective Project will be held in the Japanese Fiscal Year 1997.

  7. The participants expressed their deep gratitude to the Environment Agency of Japan for organizing and conducting the workshop, and also to Mr. Saburo Kato for his leadership and continuous efforts in finalizing the project report.
