[Abstract]


 The first steps of this study were a survey of the relationship of the quantity of CO2 emitted with the average rise in the global temperature and a survey of the cost of damage caused by global warming, followed by a study of the critical social costs of CO2 emissions based on the results of the first two surveys accompanied by a study using the inter-industry relations table to find the quantity of CO2 emitted for each product item used as building construction material. The next step was the use of the results of this research to perform comparisons of the quantity of CO2 emitted using conventional construction methods with the quantity emitted using low CO2 emitting construction methods for a number of structures including bridges and dams throughout the life cycle of these structures. This was followed by studies of differing structures with similar functions: comparisons of both the CO2 emitted as they are constructed and that emitted as they are used. Based on the results, a macroscopic study was performed to determine to what extent it would be possible to reduce the total CO2 emitted by all future construction projects. The results reveal that simply comparing costs including the calculated social costs accompanying the emission of CO2, does not offer any incentive to reduce CO2 emissions, and that from a macroscopic perspective, it will be necessary to introduce measures to provide additional incentives if emissions of CO2 are to be reduced in the future.
