To understand the mechanism of variability of the ozone layer, we developed a software system working on a workstation for interactiveanalyses of observed data, trajectory analyses and calculation/display of potentialvorticity and other meteorologicalparameters. The interrelation between the ozone variations in the two polar regions and a circulationchange in the winter stratosphere were investigated using the daily total ozone data observed by Nimbus 7/TOMS(ver.6) and the geopotentialheight data analyzed by NMC. We also developed the numerical models for the study of the time development and the stability of the polar vortex.
