Japan-Korea Environmental Policy Dialogue

In 1993, Japan concluded the Japan-Korea Environmental Conservation Cooperation Agreement with the Republic of Korea. Based on the Agreement, the Japan-Korea Joint Committee on Environmental Conservation Cooperation meets on a periodical basis to promote working-level policy dialogue on their respective environmental policies and bilateral and multilateral environmental cooperation.

Seoul Confirmed strengthening of cooperation with the view to further promotion of respective efforts to address climate change, hazardous substances, acid rain and marine conservation in the Northwest Pacific.

Tokyo Discussed bilateral cooperation for the upcoming new century; agreed on joint implementation of 32 projects including Monitoring of Long-distance Transport of Air Pollutants and Acid Deposition in Northeast Asia.

Seoul Discussed joint implementation of 29 projects including Monitoring of Long-distance Transport of Air Pollutants and Acid Deposition in Northeast Asia.

Tokyo Exchanged candid views on respective environmental policies as well as cooperation of the two countries on 21st-century environmental challenges in Northeast Asia and the entire globe. Confirmed continuation of 23 research projects in progress, including Monitoring of Long-distance Transport of Air Pollutants and Acid Deposition in Northeast Asia; discussed launch of 4 new joint projects.
8th Dialogue
(2003)
Seoul Discussed respective environmental policies and other environmental problems; decided to continue the 19 projects in progress and to launch 4 new projects.
9th Dialogue
(2006)
Tokyo Discussed future course of action on the issue of marine litter drifting onto Japan Sea coasts; presented Japan's policy measures on asbestos; confirmed pursuit of negotiations for a Japan-Korea Migratory Birds Protection Treaty that the government leaders of both countries had agreed to initiate.

Seoul Discussed global environmental issues, environmental cooperation in Northeast Asia and respective environmental policies.
11th Dialogue
(2008)
Tokyo Extensive and productive opinion exchanges were had on steps needed to strengthen collaboration on transboundary air pollution problems including dust and sandstorm as well as marine litter problems including waste plastic tanks, with the view to protecting Clean Air and Clean and Rich Sea and to further promote cooperation in the field of the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) for solid waste.

Seoul Exchanged views on climate change, biodiversity and other global environmental issues as well as environmental cooperation in Northeast Asia.
13th Dialogue

Nagasaki Discussed multilateral/regional environmental cooperation such as climate change and concerns between the two countries including marine litter, and discarded and disposed fishing equipment. Agreed to enhance environmental cooperation within several frameworks.

Seoul Exchanged opinions on actions for climate change, and cooperative actions for combating desertification and air and marine pollution in the region as well as the enhancement of environmental cooperation framework in the Northeast region.

Saga Exchanged ideas and opinions on measures to reduce marine waste, cooperation in the area of marine pollution, cooperation on the Green Climate Fund (GCF), and the 12th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBC) being held in the Republic of Korea in 2014.
