State of Japan's Environment at a Glance:Wastes

Domestic waste (chiefly household) generated in Japan in fiscal 1999 totaled 51.4 million tons, an average of 1,114 grams (approximately 2.46 pounds) per person every day. There is a growing shortage of landfill sites because the amount of waste generated is increasing. Estimates show that landfill sites in Japan will last only another 12.3 years (from fiscal year 1999) with current domestic waste generation patterns.
