The Ministry of the Environment released the state of PCB waste in storage that had been reported under the Law Concerning Special Measures for Promotion of Proper Treatment of PCB Waste (hereinafter referred to as "the PCB Special Measures Law"). This release is based on the data submitted from businesses to prefectural/municipal governments on the storage and disposal state of PCB waste as of March 31, 2004.
Compared with the previous report (stored amount as of March 31, 2003), the total amount of PCBs stored increased while the use of PCBs decreased. This is due to the progress in determining the amount of PCB waste and the familiarization with the reporting system under the PCB Special Measures Law, as well as to the fact that the shift from using PCBs to storing them has been advancing.
