Press Release

Signing of the Memorandum on Cooperation between Japan and the Republic of Bulgaria on the Kyoto Mechanisms under the Kyoto Protocol

December 20, 2005

Mr. Koichi Fukui, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of Bulgaria and Dzhevdet Chakarov, Minister of Environment and Water of the Republic of Bulgaria signed a memorandum on cooperation in facilitation of the realization of Joint Implementation (hereinafter referred to as "the JI") projects in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol today in Sophia. This is the second statement of intent* that Japan signed in terms of the JI following the first one signed with Romania in June this year. It is expected that the JI projects contributing to the reduction of GHGs would further be advanced between the two nations.

The Republic of Bulgaria has been keenly interested in the realization of the JI projects with Japan, underlining that formulation of a statement of intent between the two countries is crucial. The statement reaffirms governmental level cooperation to promote the JI projects in Bulgaria as well as securing smooth transfer of emission reduction credits to the Japanese national registry.
