Press Release

Technology Development of Energy Saving Lighting Apparatus Using White LED

October 20, 2005

Matsushita Electric Works. Ltd. announced the study result of the technology development on energy saving lighting apparatus using white light emitting diode(LED)*, one of the projects of the Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Technology Development Program funded by the Ministry of the Environment (MOE), which was jointly undertaken by Osaka prefectural government and Matsushita Electric Works. Ltd.

Under the Kyoto Protocol Target Achievement Plan decided by the Cabinet in April 2005, dissemination of high-efficient lighting using LED is considered to be one of the most effective energy-saving measures in business as well as household sectors. MOE will further work on the efforts for technology development and the promotion of introduction, aiming to establish more efficient and lower cost technologies.

* Light emitting diode (LED) is one of the semiconductors that emit light when connected in a circuit. During 1960s and 1970s, red, green and yellow LEDs were developed, followed by the innovation of blue LED by Japanese manufacturer in 1993. Consequently, white LED was developed in 1996. LED, which had been used as display in electronic appliances, has been innovated as lighting appliances since the invention of white LED. Life and power-saving feature of LED has been improved year by year.
