Status of Low Emission Vehicle Introduced as Governmental Vehicles

Ministry of the Environment announced total number of low emission vehicles (LEVs) introduced in FY 2003 and LEVs to be introduced by ministries and agencies as governmental vehicles(1) in FY 2004 respectively.(Table)

Total number of LEVs introduced by ministries and agencies in FY 2003 was 1,676, and the total number of government owned LEVs was 4,407 as of March 31, 2004. The percentage of LEVs in official cars owned by governmental ministries and agencies is approximately 73%.

The number of LEVs to be introduced in ministries and agencies in FY 2004 is 1,136. All governmental vehicles will be replaced by LEVs by March 31, 2005. The achievement of the LEVs introduction plan(2) will be finalized after April 2005 and the result will be published thereafter.

Notes: 1. Governmental vehicles are ordinary vehicles or compact cars for passengers with capacity of less than 10 passengers, which are used for general administrative duties. Purchased LEVs except for leased ones were counted.
  2. In line with the initiative by Prime Minister to replace all the government vehicles with LEVs within three years starting from FY 2002, a plan for the introduction of LEVs as governmental vehicles has been developed to promote the procurement of LEVs by ministries and agencies.
