Opening Ceremony of the NOWPAP Regional Coordinating Unit Toyama Office and the Symposium Commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the NOWPAP

The Sixth Intergovernmental Meeting of the Action Plan for the Protection , Management and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the Northwest Pacific Region (NOWPAP) in December 2000 agreed to set up a co-hosted NOWPAP Regional Coordinating Unit (RCU) in Toyama, Japan and Pusan, Korea, which would function as NOWPAP secretariat. In November 1, 2004, the opening ceremony of the NOWPAP/RCU Toyama Office will be held followed by the NOWPAP 10th Anniversary Symposium, in which the NOWPAP activities will be introduced as well as presentations on marine conservation to be given by the experts from member countries.

Mr. Masafumi Yasutomi, Vice-Minister for Transport and Hokkaido Development, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. Seizo Matsumoto, Vice-Minister for Global Environmental Affairs, Ministry of the Environment and Mr. Kaoru Ishikawa, Director-General, Global Issues Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as Mr. Yutaka Nakaoki, Governor of Toyama Prefecture and Mr. Masashi Mori, Mayor of Toyama City will attend the events. Mr. Shafqat Kakakhel, Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) will also attend the events.

The opening ceremony of the NOWPAP/RCU Pusan Office will be held on November 2, 2004.
