A caldera lake and mountain streams surrounded by a primeval forest
Craters of a double caldera remain at Lake Towada. You can gain a view of the entire lake from viewpoints on the outer rim mountains. There are also tour boats providing lake cruises. They will take you to see the inner walls of the calderas. Yasumiya Yasumitai on the lake shore is the site of Towada-jinja Shrine, which long ago attracted believers in water spirits. The Oirase stream, which flows year-round from Lake Towada, provides enchanting views of waterfalls. The landscape changes with the seasons, including the freshness of spring, the greenery of the Tohoku region's short, blazing summer, the bright foliage of autumn, and the silent snow blanketing the slopes in winter.

The famed peaks of Hakkoda peaks, marshlands created by springs, and deep forests
Hakkoda means “land woven from wetlands.” The characters that make up the name stand for “many,” “mountains,” and “wetlands.” As the name suggests, it is a mountainous land formed from volcanic eruptions. Dotted with wetlands and marshes created by springs, the area is covered by forests of Japanese beech and other deciduous broad-leaved trees. Hot springs famed throughout Japan bubble up here and there. Known for its deep winter snows, this area remains the home of an imposing and powerful nature.
