These are the waters in the vicinity of Okinoshima Island (in the city of Munakata, Fukuoka Prefecture). Okinoshima is a breeding ground for groups of sea birds such as Swinhoe's storm petrel, Japanese murrelet (an IUCN endangered species), and streaked shearwater. These waters are very important to the breeding of these sea birds and are designated an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) (BirdLife International, 2012).
