Characteristics A separate window opensReferences

These are the waters in the vicinity of Mukojima, Nakodojima, and Kitanoshima islands, members of the Mukojima Archipelago located to the north of the Ogasawara Islands. All of these waters are uninhabited. Mukojima Island is habitat for black-footed albatross and Laysan albatross. Since 2006 attempts have been made to breed albatross on Mukojima Island in order to secure a breeding ground for albatross other than Torishima Island. Black-footed albatross and other sea birds nest on Nakodojima Island as well. The land areas in these waters have been listed as a World Natural Heritage Site.
