These are the waters in the vicinity of Rishiri Island on the Sea of Japan off northern Hokkaido. Seaweed beds unfold in the coastal zone, where typical Rishiri kombu kelp beds form. This is the area of the northern limit for wakame (Ministry of the Environment, 2001).
