Characteristics A separate window opensReferences

These waters extend from the vicinity of Cape Kitsunegoshi on the southern Matsumae Peninsula through Cape Shirakami on the southern tip to the vicinity of Shojoiwa. On the east side of these waters is a succession of coastal areas with no roads, and there are no homes on the Sea of Japan side from Cape Shirakami, so that the area remains in a highly natural state. Here are a succession of connected seaweed beds (kombu kelp, wakame) with high levels of productivity. These are breeding grounds for the bird species spectacled guillemot. In the coastal reef areas are spawning grounds for Okhotsk atka mackerel and other fish (Sakurai, personal communication).
