These are the waters in the vicinity of Shichiri-nagahama coast on the Sea of Japan side of the Tsugaru Peninsula. In these waters extend the Byobuyama sand dunes, dunes 3-4 km wide that run along roughly 29 km of sandy shores from the mouth of Lake Jusanko south to the mouth of Ajigasawa Bay. As a sandy shore with no human inhabitants, Shichiri-nagahama coast retains its natural state to a high degree (Sakurai, personal communication). Innumerable wetlands large and small, including Lake Tappi, are scattered over the area extending inland from the windbreak forest. In the areas of the mouths of Lake Jusanko and the Iwaki River live brackish-water benthos such as Asian clam and others (Ministry of the Environment, 2001).
