Characteristics A separate window opensReferences

These are the waters in the vicinity of the Dozen Islands (a group of islands consisting of Chiburijima, Nakanoshima, and Nishinoshima islands) in the Oki Islands. The coastal waters in the vicinity of the Oki Islands are home to the greatest diversity of species of seaweed in the Sea of Japan, including many rare species (Ministry of the Environment, 2001). They also are a habitat for Caulerpa scalpelliformis (designated a protected species by Japan). Hoshinokami Island to the north is a natural monument as a streaked shearwater breeding ground. These waters also include a Japanese murrelet (an IUCN endangered species) breeding colony (BirdLife International, 2012).
