These are the waters in the vicinity of Yamaguchi Bay, Aio Bay, and Oomi Bay (the mouths of the Fushino and Saba rivers). River-mouth tidal mud flats unfold from Yamaguchi Bay to Aio Bay, and here live numerous benthic animals that are considered rare nationwide, including the Japanese horseshoe crab, Chaetopterus variopedatus, pen shell, parasitic Peregrinamor ohshimai, Lacuna carinifera, Cryptonatica tigrina, Lingula anatina, Patinapta ooplax and others (Ministry of the Environment, 2001).
