Characteristics A separate window opensReferences

These are the waters in the vicinity of southern Tsushima Island and the eastern side of northern Tsushima Island, Nagasaki Prefecture. Due to the effects of the Tsushima Current, Tsushima is distinguished by having warmer temperatures than the opposite shores at roughly the same latitude on the Korean Peninsula and in Russia, and by sharing many species with the Eurasian continent. Aso Bay and Tsutsu Bay in central Tsushima are home to continuous mild ria coastlines. As a result, Aso Bay includes habitats of the rare species Asclepios shiranui, Halobates matsumurai, and Halovelia septentrionalis. Coral reefs have formed in Tsunaura, together with Iki marking the area of the northern limit of coral reefs (Ministry of the Environment, 2001).
