These are the waters in the vicinity of Kumejima Island. On the sea to the east extends a coral cay 7 km in length called Hatenohama. Hatenohama also is home to expansive sea grass and seaweed beds. In the waters near Kume Island the northbound Kuroshio Current forms an abundant fishing ground. These waters also include waters where humpback whale raise their young in the winter (Ogasawara Maritime Center and Kato, 2002; Calambokids et al., 2001).
