These are the waters in the vicinity of Nago Bay on Okinawajima Island. In Nago Bay a soft bottom environment has developed from the sandy sea floor to the soft muddy floor, where diverse unique fish populations centered on gobies are being identified in recent years through research using submersibles and collecting information from photographs taken by leisure divers (Suzuki et al., 1996; Suzuki et al., 1999; Suzuki et al., 2011). The endangered species, dugong also has been confirmed in Nago Bay, albeit in only a few cases (Ministry of the Environment, 2006).
