These waters extend from southwestern Amami Oshima Island through Kasari Bay to Cape Kasari. Kasari Bay is distinguished by being the northern limit for tropical sea grass and having a large distribution of such plants (Hirayama et al, 2005). In addition, its intertidal zone is one of the few places in Japan where Lingula species can be found. It is home to highly diverse species, including Onchidium hongkongense, Listriolobus riukiuensis, Ptychodera flava and others (Ministry of the Environment, 2001).
