Selected due to high levels for the criteria 8.
These waters are centered on the Nagahama Coast on the west side of Tanegashima Island. The Nagahama Coast on Tanegashima Island's west side is one of the longest natural sandy beaches in Japan, rich in biota typical of sandy beach ecosystems. In this natural site largely free from artificial structures Meretrix lamarckii are prolific, and there is a diverse range of shellfish as well (Kato, personal communication). In addition, these waters also are important as the waters in front of an important loggerhead turtle spawning ground (Kamezaki, 2007).
