Characteristics A separate window opensReferences

These are the waters in the vicinity of the mouths of the Onogawa and Nyukawa Rivers in Beppu Bay. In the river mouth areas, tidal mud flats unfold (most of which now are artificial due to progressive development of ports and other facilities). They include breeding grounds of multiple bird species. The rare species Pyropia tenera (designated an endangered species by the Ministry of the Environment) has been confirmed to inhabit the areas of the Egawa and Honda river mouths (Ito et al., 2014).
