Characteristics A separate window opensReferences

These waters extend from Cape Okitsu in Kochi Prefecture along Cape Ino to the area of the mouth of the Shimanto River. The sandy beaches of Okitsu are gently shelving shallow sandy beaches where creatures typical of sandy beach ecosystems, such as Latona cuneata, Gomphina semicancellata, Cyclosunetta menstrualis, and others can be seen in abundance (Kato, 1999). The Shimanto River mouth is a habitat for Zostera japonica, and communities of green laver are visible here as well. In the mouth area habitation by Japanese lates, mangrove red snappers, and mudskippers has been confirmed. In addition, it also is habitat for fiddler crabs (Ministry of the Environment, 2001). In addition, one of the two pods of Bryde's whale in the vicinity of Japan is distributed in these waters (Hattori, Yamamura, 2014a).
