Characteristics A separate window opensReferences

These waters include the coasts of the towns of Kaiyo and Mugi as well as Teba, Tsushima, Oshima, and other islands in Tokushima Prefecture. Coral species are distributed along the coast in the vicinity of Mugi and Oshima, where rare species live (Ministry of the Environment, 2001). Teba Island has a brackish lagoon near the coast, where sea water flows in and the endangered and protected species Lamprothamnium succinctum grows naturally. Lamprothamnium succinctum is a member of the family Characeae, of which it is the only known species in Japan. It grows naturally only on Teba Island (Database of nationally designated cultural properties; Ministry of the Environment, 2001). These waters also are an important feeding ground for the green turtle (Kamezaki et al., 2013; Ishihara et al., 2011).
