These are the waters in the vicinity of Miyajima Island. In the coastal wetlands of southern Miyajima live Halobates matsumurai and Orthetrum poecilops miyajimaense (an endemic species). Orthetrum poecilops miyajimaense is a unique endangered dragonfly found in Japan only in three locations on Miyajima Island. While the Japanese subspecies from which it gets its name also is distributed in southern China, it is not found in Taiwan or Okinawa (Ministry of the Environment, 2001).
