Characteristics A separate window opensReferences

These are the waters of inner Osaka Bay. The area of the Yodo River mouth on the north side is dotted with tidal mud flats, abundant with large Asian clams and other plants and animals (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, official website of Osaka Bay biological survey report). In the vicinity of the mouth of the Yodo River (Shinyodogawa river) live diverse brackish-water creatures and numerous bird species, including Grandidierella osakaensis, identified in “Threatened Animals of Japanese Tidal Flats” as a near-threatened species (Ariyama, 2004; Japanese Association of Benthology, 2012; Yamanishi et al, 1991). The Osaka Nankou Bird Sanctuary included in these waters is visited by snipe and plover, with relatively large numbers of species and populations during the spring and fall migration periods. Here at least 1% of the minimum estimated population of Kentish plover has been recorded, as has at least 0.25% of the minimum estimated population of dunlin. In addition, black-winged stilt have been recorded here as well (Ministry of the Environment, 2001).
