These waters include those to the south of Toshima Island, Udone Island, Niijima Island, and Shikine Island. The waters in the vicinity of Niijima Island are home to breeding colonies of Japanese murrelet (an IUCN endangered species) and are designated an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) (BirdLife International, 2012). The waters in the vicinity of the Port of Ashitsuki on Shikine Island are home to spectacular sea jungles, where Eckloniopsis radicosa, Sargassum fusiforme (the sole community in the Izu Islands), Sargassum patens, Sargassum horneri, Sargassum crispifolium, Gelidium elegans, and others grow. Also to be seen here are Sargassum fusiforme communities and agar beds (Ministry of the Environment, 2001).
