These waters include Katsuura Bay, Okitsu Bay, Uchiura Bay, and other waters along the Awa-kominato coast. These waters constitute an intertidal reef zone in a highly natural state and with a high level of biodiversity. They are home to Phyllospadix japonicus (Nakaoka et al., 2006; Marine Biosystems Research Center, Chiba University, 2010), and on the coast of the sea extending in front of Ubara communities where articulated corallines have formed. In Tainoura live Ptilophora subcostata (in communities; this is the northern limit of their communities), Dictyopteris latiuscula, Corallina confusa, Corallina pilulifera, Calliarthron latissimum, Serraticardia maxima, Marginisporum aberrans, and Marginisporum crassissimum (Ministry of the Environment, 2001). These also are important feeding waters for green turtles (Suganuma, 2010)
