These waters include the vicinity of Cape Erimo and the mouths of the Hidakahorobetsu and Motoura rivers in southern Hokkaido. Numerous rocky shores have developed near the tip of Cape Erimo, where four species of kombu kelp grow. In particular, the different forms of Mitsuishi kombu kelp between the east and west sides of Cape Erimo are one of the area's distinguishing features (Ministry of the Environment, 2001). The reefs in the vicinity of Cape Erimo are an important landing and breeding ground for the common seal.
