On the Condition of the Released Japanese Crested Ibises

The Ministry of the Environment (MOE) has announced the condition of the Japanese crested ibises which were released into the wild on September 25, 2008 in Sado city, Niigata Prefecture. There were about 430 reports of sightings and GPS geolocations received by October 24th, 2008, and 8 out of the 10 ibises have been recognized individually. The foraging activities and powerful flights of those 8 crested ibises have been observed, and some of them seem to have settled down in their home ranges.

Judging from the above observations, the MOE assumes that their acclimatization to their natural environment is progressing. The MOE will continue collecting ecological information on the crested ibises through the monitoring of information provided by local residents.
