Dust and Sandstorm (DSS) Observation Equipment Installed in Niigata Prefecture
The Ministry of the Environment (MOE) recently installed a real-time DSS observation system, LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), in Niigata Prefecture and began its operation. This is MOE's forth LIDAR system, with the other three installed in Toyama Prefecture, Shimane Prefecture and Nagasaki Prefecture. The National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) also observes DSS using the LIDAR system in five locations in cooperation with other research organizations. Japan's DSS monitoring network now consists of nine LIDAR systems. The observation results will be soon available on the MOE's homepage as a test operation.
