Announcing the ECO ASIA Foreign Students' Essay Contest

On the occasion of the Environment Congress for Asia and the Pacific to be convened in June 2006 (ECO ASIA 2006), an essay contest will be held to introduce measures underway in the Asia-Pacific region to fight global warming and thereby foster a sense of interconnectedness and solidarity with other countries of the region. Foreign students from ECO ASIA countries currently studying in Japan are invited to submit essays in keeping with the overview below.
* ECO ASIA is a ministerial level congress on environmental issues in Asia and the Pacific region organized by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan

Theme: Mitigate global warming ? means and measures in my home country
Please introduce climate change countermeasures, eco-friendly practices and customs in your country, work styles appropriate to the climate of your country, your experience in your country, or your thoughts and opinions on climate change mitigation.


Participants: University and postgraduate students from following ECO ASIA member countries: Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, Canada, China, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, Samoa, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tonga, Tuvalu, USA, Vietnam

Submission Period: Monday, March 20, 2006 to Friday, April 28, 2006

Language for submissions: Japanese or English

Length: 800-1,200 characters in Japanese, or 500-800 words in English

Awards: Award for Particular Excellence (approximately 3 awards expected)
Award for Excellence (approximately 5 awards expected)
Award for Superior Performance (approximately 20 awards expected)
Award recipients will be contacted in early June. Excellent and Particularly Excellent winners will be invited to the award presentation ceremony in the City of Saitama, Saitama Prefecture, on the occasion of ECO ASIA 2006, which will be held June 24-25

Name, Postal address, phone number, e-mail address, Name of School, Faculty and department or academic specialty year, nationality must be mentioned in the application mail.


Other Points of Note
- All entries must be original, unpublished essays. Essays which have already been submitted to other contests, etc. will not be accepted.
- Entries are limited to one per person.
- Entries will not be returned.
- The Ministry of the Environment shall retain copyright ownership over winning essays.
- The essay once submitted cannot be replaced.
