MOEJ selected one project for the "FY2022 Project for Acceleration of Social Implementation and Dissemination of Components (GaN) and Materials (CNF) for Realizing Innovative CO2 Emission Reduction"

The Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ), selected one project from applications for the "FY2022 Project for Acceleration of Social Implementation and Dissemination of Components (GaN) and Materials (CNF) for Realizing Innovative CO2 Emission Reduction."

1. Project outline

MOEJ has been working on the development of components and materials (gallium nitride [GaN], cellulose nanofibers [CNF]) to be put to practical use and commercialized toward realizing innovative CO2 emission reduction. As these components and materials can realize more innovative CO2 emission reduction than products using conventional components and materials, it is necessary to accelerate their social implementation and dissemination so as to achieve actual CO2 emission reduction. While technologies of new materials, such as GaN and CNF, have the potential to be applied to a diverse range of fields, including automobiles, railways, and consumer equipment (e.g., home electric appliances), challenges still remain in evaluating and improving their performances and bringing down the costs, which require further development and demonstration efforts. Under such circumstances, the hurdles are high and incentives are insufficient for the private sector to commercialize these technologies on its own. Therefore, this Project aims to utilize components and materials with high CO2 emission reduction performance, develop technologies for reducing the cost for using those components and materials in products, and validate their safety, reliability, energy-saving effects, and quality improvement measures. Further, it will powerfully support and promote the practice of using innovative components and materials in products for mass production, thereby contributing to achieving the net zero by 2050.
