The establishment of the Nudge Unit of Japan

The Ministry of the Environment verifies a novel policy approach that preserves freedom of choice of targets, induces people to action by guiding their own decision making, and creates an innovation in their lifestyles.

In collaboration among industry, academia, and government, the Ministry of the Environment aims to realize a paradigm shift into a low carbon society that values the environment. For this purpose, the Ministry of the Environment will establish a Japanese model of behavioral change in a way that considers each person's case, drawing on ideas from behavioral science insights, especially the nudge theory.

Besides, in order to disseminate the nudge approach to behavioral change in both private and public sectors, the Ministry of the Environment launched the Nudge Unit of Japan on April 14, 2017 as a project team consisting of industry, academia, and local and central governments that are ambitious to make the world a better place.

The Nudge Unit of Japan will deal with not only the field of environment and energy but many other fields including health and education. It will also collaborate and share information with overseas governments, businesses, and experts.
