3rd International CCS Symposium for Low-Carbon Society

1. Syposium Outline:

The Government of Japan made a Cabinet decision on the Plan for Global Warming Countermeasures including its long-term emission reduction targets in May 2016, and the Paris Agreement entered into force in November 2016. To meet the targets and shift to low-carbon society, drastic energy saving and maximum use of renewable energy are required. Moreover, it is expected to apply Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology to large-scale emission sources such as thermal power plants that will continue to emit huge amount of CO2 for the long term through their continuing operation.

In this context, MOE started "Feasibility Study for the Introduction of Sustainable CCS Technology" in FY 2014, and "Demonstration Project of Sustainable CCS Technology" in FY 2016. This Demonstration Project includes environmental impact assessment of amine-based CO2 separation and capture process in coal-fired power plants, development of countermeasures, and knowledge gathering about operability of such power plants as peak load power, aiming for developing effective methods to introduce CCS in Japan.

As a part of this Demonstration Project, MOE will host "3rd International CCS Symposium for Low-Carbon Society" as it did last year. This symposium will include presentations by policymakers and experts of Japan or other key countries in this field as well as the outline of MOE's CCS project. MOE hopes that this symposium will promote the understanding and deepen the discussion on the CCS introduction.
