Workshop 2012 of the Asian Network for Prevention of Illegal Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes

Environmental Management Bureau, Department of Environment and Natural Resources of the Philippines (EMB), Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MOEJ) and the Basel Convention Regional Centre for South-east Asia (BCRC-SEA) coorganised the Workshop 2012 of the Asian Network for Prevention of Illegal Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes on 20 - 22 November 2012 in Cebu, the Philippines. The workshop aimed at enhancing enforcement capacity of the participating countries for the implementation of the Basel Convention and facilitating the exchange and dissemination of information for the prevention of illegal transboundary movement of hazardous wastes.

The workshop focused on updating the latest information on related rules and regulations on control of transboundary movement of hazardous wastes. The participants discussed the following agenda:

  • Update on National Regulations and Good Practices for Implementation of the Basel Convention;
  • Environmentally Sound Management of Hazardous Wastes and Other Wastes in Asia;
  • Collaboration among Regional Networks;
  • Tackling Illegal Trafficking through Enforcement Operations; and
  • Implementing Take-Back.
  • The Second day of the workshop was organised as a joint programme with United Nations Environment Programme - Regional Enforcement Network for Chemicals and Waste.
