Opinions of the Minister of the Environment on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the Ohgishima Power Station

On October 16, 2006, the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) submitted the Minister's opinions on the draft environmental impact statement for the Ohgishima Power Station in Kanagawa Prefecture, owned by Ohgishima Power Co., Ltd., to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, in accordance with the provisions of the Environmental Impact Assessment Law and the Electric Utility Law.

The Power Station plans to adopt natural gas-fired combined cycle generating systems. The MOE commented on the following two issues of this project:

1. Greenhouse gas (CO2) emission
Further decrease the CO2 emission per unit of electricity generated by these systems, by maintaining the power generation efficiency at high level.

2. Air pollutants
Appropriately operate and maintain the power generation facilities and flue gas denitrification facilities in order to keep the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx) at the lowest possible level.
