Results of the COP-MOP 5 to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety

On October 15, 2010, a new international treaty, "The Nagoya - Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety", was adopted at the 5th meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties (COP-MOP 5) to the Cartagena Protocol held in the city of Nagoya, in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The adoption of new treaty concluded 6 years of negotiations. It provides international rules and procedure on liability and redress for damage to biodiversity resulting from living modified organisms (LMO). The COP-MOP 5 adopted 17 other decisions including a 10-year Strategic Plan for the implementation of the Protocol.
