"Joint Workshop on Environmental Monitoring of Persistent Organic Pollutants in East Asian Countries and UNEP/GEF Project on Assessment of the Existing Capacity and Capacity Building Needs to Analyse POPs in Developing Countries", September 20-22, Kyoto

The Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MOE) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) will jointly organize and hold the above-mentioned Joint Workshop from September 20 to 22, 2006, in Kyoto (venue: Shiran Kaikan Annex, 11-1, Yoshida-Ushinomiya-cho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto). It is anticipated that approximately 60 government officials and/or experts from 12 countries in the East Asia sub-region; 9 countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Central and Eastern Europe and Latin America regions; and international organizations including UNEP will participate in the Joint Workshop. The discussions at the Joint Workshop will include, but not be limited to: (1) sharing information on the presence of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the ambient environment of each of the countries; (2) exchanging views on development of a regional cooperative framework for POPs monitoring according to the Stockholm Convention on POPs; and (3) also exchanging opinions on building capacity of the POPs-analyzing laboratories, inter alia,in developing countries.
