Enforcement Status of Water Pollution Related Laws in FY 2008

The MOE has compiled a summary of the FY 2008 enforcement status of the Water Pollution Control Law, the Law concerning Special Measures for Conservation of the Environment of the Seto Inland Sea and the Law concerning Special Measures for the Conservation of Lake Water Quality. The number of specified factories and business establishments subject to effluent control totaled approximately 277,000 (Table 1), among which hotels and inns are the most numerous with approximately 68,000 establishments comprising approximately 25% (Table 2) of the total during FY 2008. The number of on-site inspections of these specified business establishments was approximately 44,000. Administrative guidance was conducted in approximately 7,600 cases (Table 3). Administrative orders to improve the situation were conducted in 23 cases, administrative orders to suspend operations were issued in one case(Table 4), and 13 arrests were made for violation of effluent standards (Table 5).
